The Department of Africology of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is accepting Applications for our PhD Program for fall 2017.

Priority deadline: Applications received by Dec. 1 receive first consideration for admission and funding.

The mission of the Department of Africology is to engage in critical inquiry of the cultures, societies, and political economies of the people of Africa and the African diaspora. Africology’s interdisciplinary scope examines societies across the globe through various lenses. The PhD in Africology advances knowledge of these diverse societies to gain insights into pressing issues and critical phenomena, to critique and generate theories, and to disseminate transformative knowledge.

The PhD program in Africology offers a unique two-track option for students, who can choose to concentrate in Cultures and Society orPolitical Economy and Public Policy. Africology graduate students gain expertise in a range of research approaches, both qualitative and quantitative, drawing on the multidisciplinary background of the faculty.

Faculty

The department’s faculty command a range of expertise in areas of African American Studies, political economy, international studies, English, political science, psychological and sociological inquiry, history, and folklore. Students can work with faculty who conduct research in North and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, and Europe. Faculty members are engaged in innovative research, producing knowledge in many realms: comparative studies of women, studies African and African-derived religions, folklore, family and marriage practices, development, racial identity learning and socialization, literary history, oral traditions, social stratification, health beliefs and practices, ethnicity, nationalism, economics, segregation, political beliefs and behavior, immigration, and more.
